WOOD SPECIES

At the core of MADERA's ethos is a profound respect for wood. The connection between humans and trees is unparalleled among the materials that surround us daily. With thousands of tree species worldwide, each presenting unique opportunities for expression, we have chosen to focus on five specific species due to their structural characteristics, workability, and aesthetic appeal. We also consider sustainability, taking into account the health of each species and its impact on the environment. While we continuously explore new materials, our commitment to nature and craftsmanship remains unwavering.

EUROPEAN OAK

European oak, often called the king of the temperate forests in central and northern Europe, is one of the most remarkable species of deciduous hardwoods. While related to Quercus alba (Northern white oak), European oak stands apart with its smooth texture, consistent color range, and straight, tight grain.

WHITE ASH

American white ash is nearing extinction due to the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species devastating North American forests. The urgency to utilize this wood stems from its unique ability to capture and store atmospheric carbon. If left to decay, the carbon stored in these trees is released back into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Repurposing dead trees into flooring and furniture is one of the best ways to prevent this release. With its straight grain, remarkable durability, and long, straight trunks, white ash remains a favored choice for crafting impressive floorboards.

BLACK WALNUT

American black walnut has been a favorite of furniture makers and craftsmen for centuries, prized for its rich color, striking grain patterns, and excellent workability. Though softer than oak and ash, black walnut makes beautiful floor planks and is especially popular in traditional parquet patterns such as herringbone and chevron.

ANTIQUE HEART PINE

Reclaimed from historic buildings across the Eastern States and Industrial Midwest, heart pine is an exceptional building material, making for stunning floorboards. Often hundreds of years old, this wood was originally harvested from the vast longleaf pine forests of the Southeastern United States and used as structural elements during the rapid construction boom of the Industrial Revolution.

ELM

European elm is known for its distinctive interlocking grain, warm tones, and durability. This versatile wood is ideal for flooring, cabinetry, and furniture, offering a timeless appeal that suits both contemporary and traditional interiors. Its rich texture and natural beauty shine in classic parquet patterns like herringbone and chevron, adding a touch of elegance to any space.
